Sitka Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do creaky, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Sitka knee pain sufferers experience that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that is part of waking up and moving. Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka hears our Sitka chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Sitka knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What is one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka asks “How bad can eating be for Sitka knee pain relief?”

Sitka OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Sitka knee osteoarthritis is widespread. There are numerous Sitka knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the world suffer with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Sitka knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lowers the quality of daily life. (1) It is just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs along with red wine and olive oil as the chief source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be quite delicious as well as adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet enthusiast.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis entails inflammation as well as pain. An analysis of 3 studies points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet have lessened risk of worsening knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t have knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of acquiring knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with improved quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
